Upgrading from Exchange 2007 SP1 to Exchange 2010 SP1 -  Did a bit our of Order
In the Provess of upgrading our Exchange 2007 SP1 to 2010 SP1 I was following the How-To and one of the first things it talks about is Extending the Scheme and Preping AD. So I did the PrepAD and PrepDomain from the 2010 SP1 Install. I later Read that you need to have 2007 SP2 in order to upgrade to 2010, mostly because of the Schema Changes. Since I've already updated the Schema to 2010 SP1, do I still need to update to Exchagne 2007 SP2+? If I do, will I need to repplay the update from 2010 SP1 after I do the update? As far as co-existance. I will be create a new exchange server name for users to Connect to the new Server, so All the Clients will be changing their Config anyway, so I already know we wont be using the ability to connect to a 2007 mailbox on the 2010 server. Once the mailbox is moved to the 2010 server the users will have to be reconfigured to use the new server name. Thanks,

Yes. I would apply SP2 to the exch 2007 servers at a min. I wouldn't see a reason to reappy the SP1 update to 2010. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638158.aspx Sukh

The upgrade should have failed if you weren't at the required schema level. Are you sure you hadn't done the update for Exchange 2007 SP2 or higher already? Perhaps the domain had been prep-ed in the past and the live server never upgraded? Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Maybe, though I dont recall. The PrepareAD and PrepareDomain both worked great... The Predeployment Analyzer didn't complain either. Everthying was Informational. The Active Directory Scheme/ms-Exch-Schema-Version-Pt had the following: rangeUpper=14726 The Activity Directory Domains/Domain/Microsoft Exchange System Objects had the following: objectVersion = 13040 The exchange Site had the following: objectVersion = 13214 The Server showed it had the Following: serialNumber = Version 8.1 (build 30240.6) versionNumber = 1912701168 Though in the EMC on the 2007 server it says under server configuration 8.1 (build 240.6) from my research that was SP1.

Is the Uprade to SP2 that big of a deal to install? Its 880 Megs! I only have 150 or so mailboxes with about 120GB of Data. something I can do in the evening or should I schedule a whole day for it? Thanks, Scott<-

I would still do the upgrade, it wont take long. You could move that data in the eve, may just be better to set aside a day in case you have any problems.Sukh

I ment to do the 2007 SP1 to SP2 Upgrade. Not the 2007 SP2 to 2010 SP1. Seems like when I ran out of drive space and had to move a 3gb mailbox it took about 90 minutes. Seemed a bit Excessive. So to be sure I dont take everyone offline for a while I was going the co-Exist route and move one department at a time. Thanks,

That's what I meant, I would still upgrade to SP2 for exch 2007 then continue with the moves. Although you're not going to have the 2007 exch server around for long, I'm not sure what issues you may have between now and moving your users.Sukh

Hi Scooter, Per my knowledge, if you are using Exchange Server 2007 SP1, you need to upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP2 (before you upgrade to Exchange 2010) . Here is a document about Exchange 2007 SP2, you can know more about what will change after you upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP2. Exchange 2007 Service Pack 2 Prerequisites (Why is Exchange 2010 listed above section) http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2009/08/28/3408134.aspx Thanks, Evan Liu TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Why are you looking at going only to SP2? Why not skip and go straight to SP3? SP2 is the minimum that is required, but SP3 is a better choice. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Since he has already done the ADPrep for Exchange 2010, he wont be able to do the ADPrep for Exchange 2007 SP2, and hence, will not be able to install Exchange 2007 SP2. That is why it is failing where it is. The Schema has already been extended for 2010, and you cant install a 2007 schema over it. If I were you, I would call Microsoft about this ASAP, I would bet there is some way for you to go from where you are sitting right now to 2010, but with their assistance.

Hi, Per my knowledge, If this is an Exchange 2010 greenfield environment (an Exchange organization that consists only of Exchange 2010 servers and never had previous versions of Exchange deployed) or you have transitioned from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 and the last Exchange 2007 server has already been decommissioned, you will not be able to install Exchange 2007at a later time in this organization. But in this issue, his Exchange 2007 Server is still in the organization, So I don’t think it cannot install Exchange 2007. You can know more information from this document: Installing Exchange 2003/2007 in an Exchange 2010 Environment http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff394355.aspx For this issue, maybe you can follow Simon’s suggestion (upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP3) to have a try. He's not trying to install exchange, he is trying to do forest prep/ADPrep for Exchange 2007 SP2 AFTER he already did forest prep/ADPrep for Exchange 2010, which I dont believe you can do because the schema has already been extended to a later version of Exchange. He could re-install Exchange 2007 SP1, but not SP2, because he never extended the schema for SP2 and cant now because he has extended it for 2010. You see my point? Like I said, you need to call MS ASAP

So I did the Backup then the Install of Exchange 2007 SP2. Wish somewhere they would say that you have to run the install from a Local Drive and not a Mapped Network Share! Once I figuted out all the PowerShell Script Errors the Install of SP2 went fine. The server is back up and we are sending and receiving mail as normal. So since I did the PrepareScheme, PrepareAD and PrepareDomain with the 2007 SP2, should I redo them again with 2010 SP1? Will it hurt if they were run twice? Thanks, Scott<-

I finished the Install and with various little tweaking I believe we are up and running. It was sad that there were many Issues that I dont think were related to installing the PrepareXX of 2010 SP1 Prior to 2007 SP2 Update. The Location of the Source Files cannot be a Network Share, ADSI Edits, Registry tweaks and PowerShell Commands that all had to be found and applied for the install and then for proper running. We still are finding Active Sync Issues with some users that seem to have the Inherit Permissions remove from their account. Scott<-

Evan Liu, Please Stop posting links, closing Posts or marking non professional answers as solution if you don't even understand the problem the customer has. The customer who pays your food, your house and for your living. Yes that's us the people who buy and use Microsoft products and spend the full day debugging your stuff. 1 He has Exchange 2007 SP1 and have overseen that you have to migrate to SP2 BEFORE you start the Schema Upgrade from Exchange 2010 SP1 2 The Step to MIGRATE Exchange 2007 SP1 to SP2 does almost a 100% Reinstall of the Full Exchange 2007 and DOES/ADD uplift the IIS and other things on a Server. That's why Scooter and others tried to skip the step. If you have like 3-5 Exchange 2007 in prodcutive field that a lot of works adn around USD 2000.- 5000.- in cost if external done at night or on weekends. Also if you have modified IIS Virtual Directories for security solutions like RSA/Vasco these may have been rereseted trough the SP2 Upgrade. Thats why some people wanted to skep that upgrade and directly go to 2010. 3 If he has Server 2008R2 Domain Controllers, The Exchange 2007SP1 Setup will bring an error because he does not know the 2008R8 DC's and think they are older than 2003 (2000/nt). 4 The solution MAY be to Install Exchange 2007SP2 (setup /Prepareschema) on a old Server. He's question was right and smart to ask IF he, after that, has to run Exchange 2010 setup /prepareschema once again after he ulifted the Schema to SP2 Status. We have just run in the same situation because we have overseen the SP2 requierment and wanted to save time. all other things was perfectly pre-done and documented, analyzed, fixed before we started. We have just overssen the Requirement for SP2. The Exchange Analyzer tools are great and help us mostly to get a quick overview. Sadly there is no Exchange 2010 Readyness check like in the 2007 version. That would have may shown that there are SP1 Exchange Server around and remind the IT person. Most of the Blogs and even Technet Blogs did miss the Exchange 2007 SP2 requirement. Even in some large actual books you can buy there is no mark on that point. We currently have a ticket because we have the same error. However in our case the 2010 setup /prepareschema did not even went trough and some Schema object is missing like in some 2007 SP1 install in the past. MPS did not find out why until today and we are on hold.
